Back to school backpack drive 2018 completed with 67 backpacks filled with school essentials distributed amongst various homeless shelters in the Seattle area! Everett Gospel Mission, Sacred Heart Shelter Seattle, Salt House Kirkland, Mary’s Place Seattle and REACH Center for Hope in Renton were glad to receive the supplies for children of families housed there. Helping 67 kids start a new school year confidently with the supplies they need is always very gratifying! |
587 books were collected and donated to an elementary school in a low income neighborhood in Kent, WA. Each of the 440 children were able to select a book for themselves for the summer and the library and classrooms were able to add to their collection as well.We also donated socks, underwear, soap, lotion, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste for the children of families in need at this school. So grateful for the community we live in- where folks are generous enough to think beyond themselves!

We successfully completed our Book Drive in Indianapolis in collaboration with a local church. More than 300 books were donated to low income immigrant/refugee families. The children were thrilled to select books they wanted from a huge collection. Our enthusiastic volunteers braved the scorching heat and helped distribute books. All the books were donated by local people in the community and Indy Reads. |
One of our care package recipients introduced us to a mother of two who was looking for some help. She was in need of clothes and diapers for her 3 year old and 2 month old daughters. She also requested help with grocery supplies as she has not been able to work since the birth of her second child. We were more than happy to provide the needful to help her out during this difficult time. The look of relief on the mother’s face says it all! |
We sponsored four children to the After School Enrichment program at Fox Hill Elementary school in Indianapolis this spring. Three of the four children immigrated from Burma and one from Eritrea. The classes we funded include Tae Kwon do, Ooey Gooey Science and Creative play classes. We are excited about our partnership with the school and we are looking forward to helping more children pursue their passions. |
A care package was delivered to a family of four. We provided shoes and clothes to a 6 year old girl and a 7 year old boy. The mother is expecting another child soon and so we bought a car seat for the new arrival along with some clothes. The family immigrated from Nigeria a few years ago and is currently residing in the greater Indianapolis area. |
A one month supply of diapers and wipes was provided to 11 kids ranging in age from 1.5 months to 4 years old living in the greater Seattle area. These kids are from refugee families who had to flee under extreme circumstances from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Babies of Homelessness connected us to these families and the quick turnaround from donors helped us fulfill this need promptly! |
We collaborated with the Friends of Youth in Kirkland (Seattle) to provide female hygiene products, waterproof mattress protectors and toiletries for the children at their Youth Haven shelter. It’s always great to partner with like minded people, all with the common goal of helping children navigate difficult times. |
We are glad to continue our partnership with the REACH Center of Hope Family Shelter in Renton (Seattle). They reached out to us with the need for rain boots, rain coats, laundry detergent, training bras and school clothing for elementary age kids. We are glad to be able to help keep more kids warm and dry this season! |
Clothing was provided for three children from Ghana. One of the donors of this project visited the family and met the children. The mother was very grateful and thankful. The donor also was pleased to see the family who she was helping out. This was the first time we connected the donor directly with the recipient family. We are glad we could work in collaboration and make this a great personal experience for the donor. |
A car seat was provided to this sweet child from Syria. The mother was extremely thankful. The child was all smiles and we were glad we could help them out. This particular project was sponsored by a single donor who reached out to us wanting to take up a project with Grassroot Projects. We thank her for considering us! |
We were honored to be chosen by the Indiana University Neurorehabilitation and robotics therapy team for their annual giving for the year 2017. The team donated funds towards providing a king size mattress to a struggling family of three from Nigeria. This family had spent the last several months sleeping on an uncomfortable broken mattress. When the therapists heard the story they collected funds and made this project possible. This was our first opportunity to collaborate with a workplace for a project. Together we can ! |
We had a successful blanket drive in Seattle with over 100 warm blankets and around 100 sets of gloves, hats, socks collected from the generous citizens of Sammamish, WA. These were donated to the Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) in Seattle which helps in resettlement of refugee families; and the REACH Center of Hope family shelter in Renton, WA. It definitely helped keep that many more kids warm this winter!! |
Grassroot projects tries to supports every little need of a child. We provided diapers and wipes to infants ranging from new born to 2 years from four Syrian and Iraqi families. They were forced to flee their war torn countries and are resettling in the US to provide a safe haven for their children.
We provided a care package including winter clothing, socks, and bedding to a 13 year old boy and a 5 year old girl. This family immigrated from Nigeria. The mother also had a special request for some toys for her daughter. We took special care to provide the child with variety of toys. The smile on her face made it worth the effort. These stories make us want to continue what we do and reach out to more children. |
We provided a care package to a mother who was struggling to make ends meet after a divorce. The care package included a month’s supply of groceries to help her provide for her family.
We provided a tricycle and developmental toys to a three year old child with disabilities. This family has migrated to this country from Ethiopia and the transition has been hard as they learn about the health care system and resources for their child. The child is progressing well with therapies and the tricycle will help him maintain and improve his functional mobility. This is our first project based out of San Francisco. This project would not have been possible without the help of our volunteer who delivered the goods personally.
The first two recipients of our “Sponsor a Passion” program are two girls from Eritrea. We partnered with Fox Hill Elementary School in Indianapolis to sponsor cheerleading classes. These six week classes are a part of their after school enrichment program. This project would not have been possible without the help of our donors and their teacher who helped us identify the girls and coordinate the sponsorship. According to the teacher, the girls could not stop giggling when they found they could attend the classes. We are glad to have contributed to those smiles on their faces! |
We sponsored clothing for school and school supplies to a family of four from Iraq. We were also able to provide the 5 year old with a donated bicycle. When we met the family they had also just welcomed a newborn daughter and were struggling to make ends meet. These children were excited and the parents were very thankful when they received the package. Thanks to the donors for helping these children take their first step towards a brighter future.
We were connected to this family through a school teacher. This family of four have immigrated from Eritrea and have been in the country for only 6 months. They have 11 year old twin daughters. One of the daughters has Juvenile Diabetes. We educated the mother about the importance of physical activity, proper eating habits and regular monitoring of sugar levels. The daughters served as my interpreters as the mother did not know English. It was great to see these young girls step up and communicate with me and relay the information to their mother. We also provided the children with winter jackets, boots and jeans to prepare them for the Indianapolis winter. |
We helped a single father who moved with his three children from the Democratic Republic of Congo to United States 11 months ago. These children were provided with jackets and winter boots in preparation for the upcoming winter. When we found out the girl’s favorite color was pink we made sure we got her a pink jacket. The children were very excited to receive the gifts and couldn’t stop smiling. Another successful project supported by a generous donor. |
A 3-year old from Nigeria came to US with her mother a few months ago. The mother is a single mother with no income at this point. The mother was in need of basic food and clothing needs. She has also not been able to travel with her daughter as they don’t have a car seat. Through the generous donation of our donors we were able to provide her with food items, clothing and a car seat. |
We met this young single mother from Nigeria who came to US 3 months ago. She has three young children (aged 8yrs, 11yrs and 13 yrs) who are slowly settling down in US. One of the children has sickle cell anemia and has been hospitalized several times. We provided this family with a care package customized to the special needs of the child. |
Our project led us to a sweet 6 year old boy with an infectious smile. He is a Syrian Kurdish refugee and came to US with his parents. He has Cerebral Palsy and was in need of Diapers and clothing. Our customized care package sponsored by a donor provided him with diapers, bedding, wipes, clothing and non perishable food items. |
Our first project has been completed! We are so happy to be able to provide food and clothing to 2 adorable little boys- ages 7 and 8. We came across the mom at the Immigration Welcome Center in Indianapolis and were glad to help get them started. This is just the beginning and we are grateful for being able to make a change in someone’s life. We thank our donors and hope that we can continue to grow and touch the lives of kids at various stages and needs in their lives. |
