Nourishing new beginnings
sUPPORTING IMMIGRANT FAMILIES WITH CULTURALLY RELEVANT FOOD ASSISTANCE

Culturally relevant foods are those that reflect the traditions, customs, and practices of a specific cultural or ethnic group. These foods are often passed down through generations, holding significant meaning and connection to one’s heritage. For immigrant and refugee families, access to these foods can play a crucial role in helping them maintain their cultural identity in a new environment.

Benefits of Culturally Relevant Foods
  1. Preservation of Cultural Identity: By consuming foods that are a part of their cultural heritage, families can keep their traditions alive. This connection to their roots provides comfort and a sense of belonging, which is essential for emotional well-being.
  2. Nutritional Needs: Many traditional diets are rich in nutrients and have been developed over centuries to meet the health needs of the people within that culture. Culturally relevant foods can help maintain a balanced diet, ensuring that families receive the necessary vitamins and minerals.
  3. Culinary Skills and Knowledge: Preparing traditional meals allows families to pass on cooking techniques and cultural knowledge to younger generations. This helps in preserving not only the recipes, but also the stories and history associated with them.
  4. Social Connection: Sharing meals with family and friends is a significant social activity in many cultures. Culturally relevant foods facilitate gatherings and celebrations, strengthening community ties and promoting inclusivity.

Our Healthy Families Program
The Healthy Families program understands the importance of culturally relevant foods for immigrant and refugee families. By providing grocery cards specifically for the purchase of these foods, the program supports families in several ways:
  • Budget Supplementation: Many immigrant and refugee families face financial constraints, making it difficult to purchase foods integral to their culture. The grocery cards help ease the financial burden, allowing families to allocate funds towards other necessities.
  • Food Security: Access to culturally relevant foods contributes to food security, ensuring that families have consistent access to nutritious and appropriate foods for their dietary needs.
  • Adaptation and Integration: While adjusting to a new country, maintaining a connection to their culture through food can ease the transition for immigrant and refugee families. It also promotes cultural exchange and understanding in the broader community.
Providing access to culturally relevant foods through our Healthy Families program not only supports the nutritional needs of immigrant and refugee families but also enriches their lives by preserving cultural heritage and fostering community connections.

Blanket drive

We had a successful blanket drive in Seattle with more than 100 warm blankets and around 100 sets of gloves, hats, socks collected from the generous citizens of Sammamish, Washington. These were donated to the Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) in Seattle in support of its work to resettle refugee families and to the REACH Center of Hope family shelter in Renton, Washington.

ASSISTING KIDS AT A FAMILY SHELTER

We are glad to continue our partnership with the REACH Center of Hope Family Shelter in Renton, Washington. They reached out to us with the need for rain boots, raincoats, laundry detergent, training bras, and school clothing for elementary-age kids. We are glad to be able to help keep more kids warm and dry during our rainy winters!

DIAPERS FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN

We provided a month supply of diapers and wipes to 11 kids ranging in age from newborn to 4 years. These kids are from refugee families who had to flee under extreme circumstances from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. Babies of Homelessness connected us to these families to fill this urgent need.
